Your university does not have an exchange agreement with JGU Mainz? But you would like to apply for a semester stay?

Then you might want to request a stay as a freemover student.

Here you can find all important information on how to send us your request.

The deadline for the winter semester 2024/25 has expired.
Requests for the summer semester 2025 can be submitted from July 1 to July 31, 2024
Please apply here

You are a freemover if you would like to study at JGU as an exchange student but your home university doesn’t have a partnership with JGU.

Therefore, please check first/ again whether there is an official partnership between your home university and JGU that you may use. If you're unsure whether such a partnership exists, please ask the international office at your home university.

If you want to study as a freemover at JGU all three parties involved need to agree to your stay:

  • You 😊
  • the department of your subject at JGU and
  • your home university

We can give no guarantee that your request for a stay as a freemover will be accepted. The departments decide if they can offer you a place (capacity, academic and language requirements).

Subject

  • Admission at JGU is subject-related, so you can only be admitted if your subject at home matches the subject at JGU.
  • Please check which subjects are available at JGU and whether one of them matches the subject you are studying at your home university.

Exception:

  • MEDICINE:
Please note that as a medical student you can only come to Mainz as a freemover to complete your PJ (practical year). In this case, you need at least C1 knowledge of German.

Transcript of Records (Home university)

  • The departmental coordinators use your transcript of records to check whether your study program is compatible with the program at JGU.

Courses

  • As an exchange student/ freemover, you should take at least 50% of your courses in the subject for which you have been accepted.
  • Additionally Gutenberg International School (GIS) offers special courses for all exchange students in English or in German at intermediate level. A list of all english-taught courses open to exchange students for all subjects can also be found at the GIS.

General conditions for all subjects:

  • Not all subjects at JGU offer courses taught in English. Therefore for these subjects you need to have at least B1 level in German.
  • Some subjects only offer courses in English language on an irregular basis.
  • You must upload a language certificate for German and English when you send us a freemover request (see below)
  • In order to study successfully at JGU, i.e. to be able to understand the German taught lessons and write exams, you ideally need German language skills at intermediate level B2, but at least B1 with a good final grade.
  • To be able to follow courses taught in English well, you ideally need English language skills at intermediate level B2, but at least B1 with a good final grade.
