There is more to studying at JGU than just studying

Thank you for interest in Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU).

Please check first, however, whether there is an offical partnership between your home university and JGU which you may use.

If you want to study as a freemover at JGU all three parties need to agree to your stay.

1) You 😊

2) the department of your subject at JGU and

3) your home university.

Please follow the steps indicated below:

STEP 1: CONFIRMATION OF THE DEPARTMENT AT JGU

Please write a simple email to the respective contact person in the department/ subject that you are interested in. You should study this subject or at least a related one at your home university. You should have already earned a decent amount of credits in this subject at your home university also.

Please indicate at which university you study, what you study at your home university, in which semester you want to come to JGU and if you want to stay for one or two semesters.

Please attach your transcript of records and indicate your language skills German and/or English (if you have an offical language certificate, please include it). You should have at least B1 level in the language of instruction to study at JGU

You can find all contact information on departmental coordinators here: Departmental coordinators (pdf download)

Please be aware that you can only be accepted if there are capacities left. There is no guarentee that you will be able to come to JGU. Especially in German Studies, there likely is hardly any or no capacity at the moment. In Economics and Business Administration, you already need to have sufficient credits from your home university if you want to study in English since these courses are for advanced bachelor or master students only. If you are able to take courses in German you may also come to JGU with fewer credits from your home university.

In case you are interested in the department of Economics and Business Administration, please contact fb03-international@uni-mainz.de .

If you are interested in Translation & Interpretion, we do have a faculty in this area. Please mind that this faculty is on a different campus - in Germersheim - which is about 100 km away from Mainz. If you are interested in studing there, please contact the International Office Germersheim: intger@uni-mainz.de. However, please only contact them if you really want to stay in Germersheim also. It will not be possible to commute from Mainz to Germersheim during the semester.

STEP 2: CONFIRMATION OF YOUR HOME UNIVERSITY

Once you got the acceptance of the department at JGU, please write an email to the responsible person in charge of freemover applications for abroad at your home university (International Office) in order to get the confirmation (a simple confirmation by email is enough).

Please indicate why you want to go to JGU Mainz as a freemover, for which semester and if you want to stay for one or two semesters.

STEP 3: NOMINATION AT JGU

Once you have received the confirmations by the department at JGU and by your home university (simple emails are enough), please write an email to gis@international.uni-mainz.de

Please indicate at which university you study, what you study at your home university, in which semester(s) you want to come to JGU and if you want to stay for one or two semesters. Please also mention the contact of the person who gave you the confirmation at JGU and the contact of the responsible person at your home university (International Office).

Please attach the confirmations received by the department at JGU and your home university!

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

We will then send an email to the contact person at your home university (International Office) including a link to our nomination form, that has to be filled out.

Once we receive the nomination, we will confirm it to you, to your home university and to your contact person at JGU and send you all further information for nominated students including Practical Guides and Manuals (you will find them on this page under "I am nominated for the winter semester 2022-23 at JGU and would like to know what do I have to do when?") to guide you through all the necessary steps.

QUICK FACTS FOR FREEMOVER

  • Academic Calender: official winter semester 01.10. - 31.03., official summer semester 01.04. - 30.09. Please be aware that you cannot have student status and your student ticket for public tranportation before the offical start of your first semester at JGU.

  • Application deadlines: 15.07. for winter semesters, 15.01. for summer semesters

  • Visa: If you need a visa for studying in Germany, we highly recommend to get it in your home country (even though citizens from some countries may also be able to apply for it within 90 days after entering Germany)
  • Learning Agreement: The academic advisor of the subject that accepts you is responsible for your learning agreement if you need one. For learning agreements in the department of Economics and Business Administration, please contact fb03-international@uni-mainz.de.

Thank you for interest in Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU).

For students coming from universities in Ukraine, JGU does offer the possibility to enroll for one or two semesters as EXCHANGE STUDENTS/FREEMOVER (= an exchange student outside of a framework such as Erasmus+)

This may be an option for you if you missed the deadlines for application for a degree-program at JGU or if you plan to go on with your studies in Ukraine after a study period in Germany.

STEP 1: CONFIRMATION OF THE DEPARTMENT AT JGU

To get the admission to enroll as Freemover at JGU you need the confirmation of the department that they can accept you (a simple email confirmation is enough).

Please write an email to the respective contact person in the department/ subject that you are interested in.

Please indicate at which university you study, what you study at your home university, for which semester you want to join JGU and if you want to come for one or two semesters.
Please attach your transcript of records

You can find all contact information on departmental coordinators here: Departmental coordinators (pdf download)

In case you are interested in the department of Economics and Business Administration please contact fb03-international@uni-mainz.de .

Please note:
Due to the war in your home country, you don’t need to hand in a confirmation or nomination by your home university (as freemover applicants generally do) – the confirmation from the department is enough.

STEP 2: CONTACT GIS Services

The GIS Services are part of the International Office and are the main contact for exchange students.

Please write an email to gis@international.uni-mainz.de

Please indicate at which university you study, what you study at your home university, for which semester you want to join JGU and if you want to come for one or two semesters. Please also mention the contact of the person who gave you the confirmation.

Please attach the confirmation received by the department at JGU

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Once we receive your email, we will send you all further information for nominated students including Practical Guides and Manuals to guide you through all the necessary steps.

If you have further questions please write an email to gis@international.uni-mainz.de.

You can find information on various assistance offers (e.g. on the topics of counseling, accommodation and financial support) at Help for Ukraine.
