ERASMUS/ Exchange Students

Welcome to the website of the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (JGU). You want to study at our university for one or two terms as an exchange student?

On the following sites we try to give you all the information you need to prepare your stay at JGU.

This is the right site for you, if you want to...
  • study at JGU within an exchange program and for one or two terms only
  • enroll for one or two terms at JGU and apply as a non-degree seeking student.
This is *not* the right site for you, if you want to...
There are different ways to come to JGU Mainz as an exchange student:

University Partnerships

  • There has to be a university agreement and exchange agreements between your home university and JGU.
  • You need to apply for the exchange program at your home university. Normally you do this through a partnership representative for the JGU or the International Office at your home university.
  • You need to be nominated by your home university as exchange candidate. Without this nomination your application at JGU will not be accepted.

ERASMUS-Program

  • There has to be a departmental bilateral agreement between your home university and JGU.
  • You need to apply as exchange student at your home university. Normally you do this through an ERASMUS-coordinator or the International Office at your home university.
  • You need to be nominated by your home university as exchange candidate. Without this nomination your application at JGU will not be accepted.

Other Scholarship programs of German or international organisations, e.g. DAAD or Fulbright

  • You need to apply at a German or international organisation (e.g. DAAD or Fulbright) for exchange studies in Germany.
  • Once you get the conformation for the scholarship, please contact the organisation to learn whether you need to apply and send all the necessary documents (including the confirmation for the scholarship) to JGU yourself, or whether they will do that for you.

    Please note:
There are also scholarships for degree-seeking programs. If you apply for such a scholarship, you are not an exchange student.

Self-organized stay without exchange program

  • If your degree program requires a temporary term abroad, you can apply at our university as exchange student.
  • In this case please add to your application the following documents:
  1. Informal confirmation of your home university that your study requires a term abroad.
  2. A confirmation of the department at JGU that they accept you as an exchange student.
